Life in Retrospect

“Cause the good ole days weren’t always good
And tomorrow ain’t as bad as it seems.”
– Billy Joel, “Keeping the Faith”

I don’t like looking back into my past
I’m chagrined by my immaturity
I’m ashamed of how I treated people
I cringe at my errors and omissions
I hate having to sift through all the crap
To find a handful of happy moments

I’m anxious looking into the future
Wondering where life will deposit me
In the remaining years spread before me
I’m terrified of running out of time
Knowing there is much to experience
Before I shake off this mortal coil

I prefer to enjoy the here and now
With my family and closest friends
Writing poems, essays, and short stories
Genuinely satisfied with my job
Relegating the past where it belongs
Tentatively moving toward the future
